Resurfacing Face Wash: What 4% AHA + Salicylic Acid Actually Does to Your Skin

What does the AccuFix Resurfacing Face Wash do?
It combines a 4% AHA complex (glycolic and lactic acid) with 0.5% salicylic acid to exfoliate at two levels simultaneously — glycolic acid on the skin surface to fade marks and improve brightness, lactic acid for hydration and texture, and salicylic acid inside the pore to prevent new congestion. It is suitable for all skin types including dry and mature skin. Not suitable for fungal acne.

Most people think a face wash just cleans. Apply, lather, rinse — done.

The AccuFix Resurfacing Face Wash does clean. But it also does something most face washes cannot: it exfoliates, brightens, and addresses pore congestion in the 30 to 60 seconds it sits on your skin — and it does this without stripping, without drying, and without requiring you to add another step to your routine.

Before we get into how it works — one quick clarification that saves a lot of confusion.

If your primary concern is acne, blackheads, and oily skin —  the AccuFix Salicylic Acid Cleanser is likely the better starting point — and we have written a complete guide on exactly which salicylic acid face wash suits which skin type: Salicylic Acid Face Wash: 1% or 2%? A Cosmetic Scientist Settles the Debate. It also contains glycolic acid alongside salicylic acid, and it clears pores effectively — but its formula is built around acne control first, brightening second.

The Resurfacing Face Wash is different. Its primary focus is brightening, texture, and acne marks — with pore clearing as a secondary benefit. If your skin is clear but dull, uneven, and marked from old acne — this is the one. If you are still dealing with active acne and want to address marks at the same time — read on, because it handles both, just with a different priority. This is how it works.

Two types of exfoliation. One face wash.

The formula contains both AHA and BHA — two types of exfoliating acids that work through completely different mechanisms. Understanding this is the key to understanding why the Resurfacing Face Wash does what it does.

AHAs — glycolic and lactic acid are water-soluble. They work on the skin's surface, breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells so they shed more efficiently. The result: dull, uneven skin is replaced by fresher, brighter cells underneath. Surface pigmentation fades. Texture smooths. Skin tone becomes more even.

BHA — salicylic acid is oil-soluble. Unlike AHAs, it can travel through sebum inside the pore and break down the buildup of oil and dead cells that causes blackheads, whiteheads, and congestion. It also has anti-inflammatory properties — which means it calms the redness around existing pimples at the same time.

Most face washes contain one or the other. This formula contains both — which is why it addresses two separate skin concerns in a single cleansing step.

Why glycolic acid works differently from every other AHA

Glycolic acid gets talked about more than any other AHA — and for good reason.

It has the smallest molecular size of all alpha-hydroxy acids. This matters because smaller molecules penetrate more effectively. Glycolic acid can reach deeper into the skin than lactic or mandelic acid — which is why it is more effective for stubborn hyperpigmentation, rough texture, and the kind of dullness that surface-only exfoliants cannot touch.

Research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology has consistently shown glycolic acid to be one of the most effective cosmetic ingredients for improving skin texture, evening skin tone, and reducing the appearance of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — the dark marks left after acne heals.

In a face wash, glycolic acid has 30 to 60 seconds on skin before it rinses. That is enough for surface-level exfoliation — clearing the dead cell buildup that makes skin look flat, uneven, and dull. For deeper pigmentation treatment, the serums and leave-on products in your routine do the heavier work.

What lactic acid adds — and why it is here alongside glycolic

Most AHA face washes use glycolic acid alone. The Resurfacing Face Wash uses a combination — glycolic acid and lactic acid together.

This is intentional.

Lactic acid has a larger molecular size than glycolic — it penetrates more slowly and more gently. It also does something glycolic acid does not: it acts as a humectant, attracting moisture to the skin surface while it exfoliates. This is why lactic acid is particularly effective for dry and dull skin — it improves texture and brightness without the dryness that stronger acids can cause.

In this formula, glycolic acid provides the deeper exfoliation. Lactic acid adds surface refinement and ensures the formula does not strip moisture in the process. Together they form a 4% AHA complex that exfoliates more comprehensively — and more comfortably — than either acid alone.

What 0.5% salicylic acid adds that the AHAs cannot

Glycolic and lactic acid cannot enter the pore. They work on the surface.

Salicylic acid enters the pore. It is the only common exfoliating acid that can — because it dissolves in oil, not water.

At 0.5% in a wash-off formula, salicylic acid provides gentle pore maintenance — keeping sebum and dead cell buildup from accumulating without the aggressive exfoliation of higher concentrations. It is the reason the Resurfacing Face Wash also helps with blackheads and congestion-related texture, not just surface dullness.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, salicylic acid remains one of the most consistently recommended over-the-counter ingredients for acne because of its unique ability to work inside the pore and reduce inflammation simultaneously.

The supporting ingredients — and why they are not just filler

Acid face washes often contain nothing except the acid. The Resurfacing Face Wash is built differently — the non-acid ingredients are as important as the actives.

Turmeric (Curcuma Longa Root Extract)
Curcumin — the compound that gives turmeric its colour — is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. It protects skin cells from free radical damage and has been shown to support collagen-producing fibroblast activity in the skin. In this context, it counterbalances the temporary inflammation that exfoliation can trigger and adds antioxidant protection during the cleansing step itself.

Honey
Raw honey has natural antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. In skincare, it soothes irritation and helps maintain moisture during active cleansing. It also inhibits the growth of certain microbes — including, in some research, Malassezia, the yeast associated with fungal acne. Despite this, the formula as a whole is not fungal acne safe due to other ingredients — this is important to note.

Grapeseed Oil
A lightweight, fast-absorbing oil high in linoleic acid — a fatty acid that research shows is naturally deficient in the sebum of acne-prone skin. Replenishing linoleic acid at the skin surface helps regulate sebum composition and supports a healthier skin barrier. It absorbs without heaviness and does not interfere with the exfoliating action of the acids.

These three ingredients work together to ensure the formula cleans and exfoliates without leaving skin dry, irritated, or compromised — which is the most common failure point of acid face washes.

Who is this face wash for

Dull skin that no longer responds to a regular cleanser. If your face wash cleans but your skin still looks flat, grey, and tired — the Resurfacing Face Wash addresses this directly through surface exfoliation.

Post-acne marks and uneven skin tone. Glycolic acid accelerates the shedding of discoloured surface cells, making it one of the most accessible first steps for fading PIH — the dark marks left after pimples heal.

Rough, uneven texture. Skin that feels rough or looks bumpy without active acne responds well to consistent glycolic acid use. Cell turnover speeds up, dead cell buildup clears, and texture smooths over 4 to 6 weeks of regular use.

Mature skin. Cell turnover naturally slows with age, which is why mature skin looks more dull and uneven. The AHA complex supports faster renewal and the grapeseed oil and honey provide the nourishment that mature skin needs alongside exfoliation.

Skin that wants two concerns addressed in one step. If you have both congestion (blackheads, pores) and surface dullness — the dual AHA + BHA formula addresses both without requiring separate products.

Who should not use this face wash

Fungal acne-prone skin. The formula is not fungal acne safe — some of the ingredients can feed Malassezia. Use the AccuFix Salicylic Acid Face Wash Gel instead — it is fungal acne safe and provides pore-clearing without the AHA component.

Very sensitive or reactive skin. If your skin reacts badly to chemical exfoliants generally, start with the AccuFix Hydrating Gentle Daily Cleanser to build barrier strength first. Introduce this face wash gradually once your barrier is stable.

People currently over-exfoliating. If your skin is already showing signs of barrier damage — tightness, redness, burning, unusual dryness — stop all actives, repair your barrier, then reintroduce slowly.

The AccuFix Resurfacing Face Wash

4% AHA complex and 0.5% salicylic acid, with turmeric, honey, and grapeseed oil. For dull, textured, and acne-marked skin.

How to use it for best results

Frequency: Start with 2 to 3 times per week — not daily. This is an exfoliating face wash, not a daily gentle cleanser. Give your skin time to adjust before increasing frequency. Most skin types can tolerate daily use after 3 to 4 weeks, but there is no benefit to rushing this.

Application: Wet your face with lukewarm water. Apply a small amount — a 10p coin-sized amount is enough for the full face. Massage gently in circular motions for 30 to 60 seconds. Rinse thoroughly.

The 60-second rule: The acids need contact time to work. A rushed 10-second wash and rinse gives the glycolic acid no time to do anything. 60 seconds of gentle massage gives it time to break down surface dead cell bonds.

Follow with moisturiser: Always. Exfoliated skin has had its outermost protective layer removed — it needs moisture sealed in immediately. The AccuFix Niacinamide Cream pairs well — lightweight, non-comedogenic, and its niacinamide complements the brightening action of the AHA complex.

SPF is non-negotiable: Glycolic acid and lactic acid significantly increase UV sensitivity. Every morning after using this face wash — even if you use it at night — wear SPF 50. Without it, you are actively making pigmentation worse. The Daily Defence SPF is lightweight and non-comedogenic.

What to realistically expect — and when

Week 1 to 2: Skin feels smoother and softer after washing. You may notice mild tightness initially — this settles. Some people experience mild purging — small surface breakouts in congestion-prone areas. This is normal and temporary.

Week 3 to 4: Visible improvement in surface texture. Skin looks more even. Early improvement in lighter surface marks.

Week 6 to 8: Significant improvement in dullness and tone. Post-acne marks noticeably lighter, especially recent ones. Skin feels consistently cleaner and more refined after washing.

Week 10 to 12: Best results for stubborn marks and texture. Combined with a brightening serum and daily SPF, skin tone looks significantly more even.

Consistency matters more than frequency. Using it 3 times a week every week beats using it daily for a few days then stopping.

Where it fits in your routine

Evening routine (recommended): Resurfacing Face Wash → Brightening Serum (Powerhouse Serum) → Moisturiser

Morning routine (after night use): Gentle Cleanser → Moisturiser → SPF 50

On nights you use retinol: Use a gentle non-active cleanser instead — do not combine a glycolic acid face wash with retinol in the same evening. Alternate them.

FAQs

Q: Can I use the Resurfacing Face Wash every day?
Start with 2 to 3 times a week and build up over 3 to 4 weeks. Daily use is possible for skin that has fully adjusted to AHAs — but there is no benefit to daily use immediately. Slower introduction protects your barrier and produces better long-term results.

Q: Will this face wash fade my acne marks?
Yes — indirectly and over time. Glycolic acid accelerates cell turnover, which speeds up the shedding of discoloured surface cells. This makes marks fade faster than they would naturally. For faster results, pair with a leave-on brightening serum like the Powerhouse Serum — which addresses pigmentation from multiple pathways simultaneously.

Q: Can I use this with my salicylic acid serum?
Not on the same night. Both are exfoliants — combining an AHA face wash with a leave-on SA serum in the same routine is over-exfoliation. Use the Resurfacing Face Wash on some evenings, your SA serum on others.

Q: Is this face wash safe during pregnancy?
The formula is marked pregnancy safe. However, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, always consult your doctor before using any active skincare ingredients.

Q: My skin felt a little tingly after the first use — is that normal?
A very mild tingling from acids during the 60-second application is normal — especially for skin new to AHAs. It should stop when you rinse. If it continues after rinsing, or if there is burning or redness, you are likely sensitive to this concentration. Reduce frequency to once a week and build up more slowly.

Q: What is the difference between this and the Salicylic Acid Face Wash Gel?
The SA Face Wash Gel contains 1% salicylic acid only — it focuses on pore clearing and is fungal acne safe, suitable for daily use. The Resurfacing Face Wash contains 4% AHA + 0.5% SA — it addresses both pore congestion and surface dullness, marks, and texture. It is not fungal acne safe and is used 2 to 3 times weekly rather than daily.
